why I stopped posting for the algorithm

I didn't leave Instagram. I just stopped pretending it was enough.

I still post on Instagram. Let's be clear. I'm not one of those people who makes a big announcement about leaving and then logs back in three days later in secret.

But something shifted for me about a year ago. I started noticing which photos I was actually proud of and which ones I was posting because I knew they'd perform. Those are two very different things.

The performing-for-the-algorithm problem

Instagram rewards a specific version of you. Consistent aesthetic. Predictable content cadence. The kind of face that reads well as a thumbnail. I can do all of that. I've gotten good at it.

But it's a costume. And the costume started feeling heavy.

The stuff I actually like - the weird light, the unplanned moments, the photos where I look like a real person having a real feeling - those don't perform. They get 40% of the engagement of the polished ones. The algorithm does not care about your best work. It cares about consistency and familiarity.

Building something else

So I built somewhere else. Somewhere the algorithm isn't in the room with me.

Patreon is mine. SeraphinaWorld is mine. The people who find their way here found their way here on purpose - they weren't served a post because it fit a pattern. They came looking for something real and I try to give them that every time.

That's the difference. Instagram is me performing for strangers. This is me talking to people who actually showed up.
